                                     The Magic Minute

 By Harriet May Savitz

13th Happening

Charlie Wren was a busy bird, as most Cactus Wrens were.  He never seemed to stop moving.  There was always so much to do.  His most important job was keeping the insects away from the gardens.  He was good at his job and he didn’t miss a day’s work.

“Never done.  Never done,” Charlie Wren complained in his disagreeable chattering voice.  Every day there were more insects eating up the garden.  He didn’t know where they came from, but they kept coming.

Charlie was very organized about his work and stayed close to the ground.  He knew just how many gardens he could clean up in one morning.  He had two more to do when he received the message from THE ONE.

“Charlie Wren.  I need a favor.  Stop what you are doing and gather some GOOD NEWS about the TENANTS.  Deliver it to the Golden Eagle on the beach.”

Charlie was tempted to tell THE ONE that he had two more gardens to clear of insects, but he decided the gardens could wait.  THE ONE would not.

The Eagle stood waiting on the beach.   He faced the Moray Eel who had approached him.

“You can’t keep us here forever,” the Moray Eel told him.

“I can keep you here as long as is necessary,” the Golden Eagle responded.

“We will see about that,” replied the Moray Eel as he returned to the other FISH on the beach.

A Cactus Wren flew from the sky.  Though Charlie Wren was one of the largest Wrens, today he felt insignificant facing so many gathered on the beach.

“I bring you GOOD NEWS,” said the Cactus Wren with some importance.  “Today I watched a family of TENANTS laugh together. And play together.  And just have a good time together.  They seemed to like each other.  There was a loving feeling around them.  Every day a TENANT loves another TENANT somewhere in the world.”

“We want WAR!” shouted the FISH.

The MOLLUSKS continued their DEEP THINKING.

“You mean I left my gardening for such an ungrateful group,”  Charlie Wren remarked, as he made his unpleasant, disagreeable chattering sounds and flew off into the sky.
